美国梅奥诊所虽被称为“诊所”，但实际上是一所拥有悠久历史的综合医学中心。梅奥的历史最早可追溯到19世纪中期。1864年梅奥医生在明尼苏达州罗切斯特市创建了一个以救治美国南北战争伤员为主的诊所。战后梅奥医生的两个儿子秉承父业，与当地一所女修道院合作，扩大诊所规模。从20世纪初开始，梅奥诊所逐渐创建起了一套新的医学管理模式、医学理念和治疗手段，成为一家多专科协作管理医院，创立了住院医生（专管病房的医生）培训系统。如今，梅奥诊所在佛罗里达州和亚利桑那州另设有分所，同时拥有自己的医学院和涵盖周边几个州的数十家医疗诊所，目前其临床专家及科学家已达2700多名。

The current-day Mayo Clinic is an integrated practice of more than 3,700 physicians and scientists, and a total employment including nurses, students, and allied health staff of more than 56,000 persons.
