Magellan Biosciences, Inc. was established in October 2004 through the combination of ESA Biosciences and Dynex Technologies – two dynamic companies that address emerging growth markets in biomedical research and clinical diagnostics. In November 2006, we added TREK Diagnostic Systems. TREK is a global provider of products for microbiology labs. Our analytical products range from stand-alone instruments and reagent consumables, to fully integrated systems for complex sample analyses. They encompass proprietary detection technologies – including electrochemical and novel charged-aerosol detectors key to quantitative and qualitative analysis of biomolecules, microplate readers and washers for microplate-based biomolecular immunoassays, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) products, and the latest in laboratory-scale automation and software. Our products also have applications in industrial R&D and academic markets.
Headquartered about 30 miles northwest of Boston in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Magellan employs a talented, multidisciplinary staff of more than 300 employees worldwide, the vast majority of whom work at our subsidiary companies. These include design engineers, applications scientists, marketing specialists, and precision-manufacturing experts. Many hold advanced scientific or engineering degrees. Employees work cross-functionally to provide quick response to customers and to solve complex product-development and technical-support problems.
We produce and sell our products through our subsidiaries. Our strong brands are well-regarded in the marketplace, and our customer feedback tells us time and time again that customers prefer to turn to an expert in the particular product, application, or technology – rather than a generalist. At the Magellan level, we are consolidating and leveraging back-office activities – finance, IT, HR, etc. – to facilitate the work of our subsidiaries and free up their time and energy to focus on their core competencies: designing, making, and marketing best-in-class products to meet the changing needs of current and future customers, and providing top-quality service and technical support.
