Navitar’s cutting edge optical technology dates back over 60 years with the legacy of Navitar founder, David Goldstein’s first optical company, Elgeet Optical. It was at Elgeet where David Goldstein pioneered the spirit of making the worlds most innovative optics for the most revolutionary applications. In 1954, the Navitar brand was first introduced by Elgeet on lenses that were developed for the U.S. Navy for missile tracking. Soon thereafter, optics for aerial reconnaissance were developed. It was also at Elgeet where the worlds first observation satellite optics were developed for NASA’s Tiros 1 satellite, which is on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

The innovation continued in 1955 with the ground breaking Golden Navitar 12mm F1.2 lens - the world’s first mass produced aspheric lens developed for use on 16mm movie cameras. In the late 50’s, Navitar’s excellence and experience in microscope lens applications began when Elgeet was appointed as the exclusive U.S. distributor for the microscope division of Olympus Optical for over 9 years. The microscope products were branded under the Elgeet-Olympus name and were the first Japanese microscopes sold in the United States.
David Goldstein went on to form D.O. Industries in 1972, which became the modern day Navitar, Inc. in 1993. David Goldstein’s pioneering spirit was passed on to his sons Julian and Jeremy Goldstein who both lived in Japan and studied Japanese optical manufacturing techniques in the 1980’s. The Goldstein brothers formally purchased Navitar from their father in 1994. Julian and Jeremy Goldstein are proud to continue the legacy of innovation by developing leading-edge optical technologies for the next generation of cutting edge companies.
